Mount Evelyn Local History
Mount Evelyn is a suburban town located in the Yarra Ranges Shire of Victoria, Australia. It is situated approximately 37 kilometers east of the Melbourne CBD. The suburb was named after Mary Evelyn (nee Fraser), the wife of Albert Le Souef, who was a pioneer from the early 1850s in the area.
The first European settlers arrived in the area in the 1840s and began clearing the land for farming. The area was originally known as Olinda Creek after the creek that runs through the area and was home to a small community of farmers.
During the 1880s, the railway line was constructed from Melbourne to Lilydale, which led to the development of several small townships along the route, including Mount Evelyn. The railway line provided a means of transport for local produce such as apples, cherries, pears, and strawberries, which were grown extensively in the area.
The town of Mount Evelyn was officially established in the late 1800s, and by the early 1900s, it had become a popular holiday destination for city dwellers. Many people would visit the area to enjoy the fresh air, scenic views, and natural beauty of the nearby Dandenong Ranges.

During World War I, many young men from Mount Evelyn and the surrounding areas enlisted to fight for their country. The town also played host to several fundraising events to support the war effort, including a patriotic concert held in the local hall.
In the 1920s and 1930s, Mount Evelyn continued to grow, with new housing developments and businesses opening in the area. The town also became home to several community organizations, including the local CFA brigade and the Country Women's Association.
During World War II, Mount Evelyn once again played its part in supporting the war effort. The town hosted several air raid drills, and locals were encouraged to grow their own vegetables to support the war effort.
